Statement from Will County Democratic Chair Bill Thoman

PLAINFIELD – Bill Thoman, the chair of the Will County Democratic Central Committee, has issued the following statement following the results of the March 17, 2020, primary election:

“From a spirited debate of ideas, to a rare primary endorsement by our Party, to unprecedented shutdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic, the March 2020 primary has been one for the history books – for the Will County Democratic Party and for the country at large.

“I want to congratulate all of those who were victorious in last night’s contests. Though all of the vote-by-mail votes have not yet been received by the Clerk’s Office, it’s clear that State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant will be our party’s standard-bearer to succeed Larry Walsh, Sr., as the Democratic nominee for County Executive. Congratulations to Senator Bertino-Tarrant, her team, and her supporters!

“It’s also clear that Laurie Summers – our party’s endorsed candidate – has routed her opponent. Congratulations go to Laurie, and to the whole Will County Democratic Party that came together to support her in an unprecedented way.

“Now is the time to rest, relax, and practice social distancing. It’s also time to reflect on what’s at stake this November: a Democratic countywide slate, a Democratic county board, state elected officials, and so much more.

“Though the primaries can be contentious, there’s too much at stake in November – with Donald Trump seeking four more years of destructive policies at the federal level – to sit this one out. I urge all Democrats, whether your candidate won or lost last night, to support our slate, our party, and our values come November.

“Thank you, and stay safe!”

Will County executive retirement sparks two-way Democratic primary race

Author: Editor

For the first time in 16 years, Will County voters will elect a new county executive to lead county government as it continues to deal with growth and development issues.

County Executive Larry Walsh, an Elwood Democrat, last year announced he would not seek a fifth term so he could instead focus on health concerns. Walsh has endorsed his chief of staff, Nick Palmer, in the Democratic primary. Palmer, a Bolingbrook Democrat, also has the backing of several county board members.
