2nd District race in homestretch

The complexities of a special primary contest to replace Jesse Jackson Jr. in Congress gave way the final weekend before the election to more traditional campaigning as candidates spent Sunday visiting churches and restaurants in search of votes.

The three top contenders for the Democratic nomination in the 2nd District — Robin Kelly, Debbie Halvorson and Anthony Beale — each displayed optimism that they would cross the finish line first after the voting is finished Tuesday.

Feds and state reach deal on 2nd Congressional District election

The U.S. Department of Justice has resolved its dispute with the Illinois State Board of Elections over the handling of votes from overseas military personnel in the special election to replace U.S. Rep Jesse Jackson.

Justice department officials were concerned that U.S. citizens living or working abroad wouldn’t get ballots soon enough before the Feb. 26 primary.

22 candidates files to fill ex-Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s seat in Congress

The flood gates that opened after U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned from his seat last November closed on Monday with 22 people filing to represent the 2nd Congressional District.

With the crowded field of 17 Democrats and five Republicans, some candidates were baring their fund-raising credentials to set themselves apart from the pack.

Robin Kelly aims for Jackson’s seat; Quinn sets April 9 for election

The field to fill the U.S. House seat vacated by Jesse Jackson Jr. expanded Sunday as former Illinois state Rep. Robin Kelly announced she is running for the 2nd Congressional District office.

Kelly, who was appointed chief administrative officer for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle in 2011, was chief of staff to former state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and ran unsuccessfully to replace him when he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate. She is a former state representative from Matteson, which is in the 2nd District.

Hutchinson makes it official: State senator running for Congress

State Sen. Toi Hutchinson, D-Olympia Fields, a south suburban Democrat who rose to prominence in Springfield after replacing former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, said Thursday she is running for Congress in April's special election. 

"Families in the south suburbs and the South Side deserve a representative who understands their concerns and who will work alongside President [Barack] Obama to create new jobs, rebuild our roads and schools, and protect the gains we've made on equal pay, health care and civil rights," the 39-year-old said in a Facebook post Thursday afternoon. "I'm going to work hard every day to help the people of the Southland and I'm looking forward to earning your support over the coming months."
